The legislature of 1903 author- ized a state art society and made an appropriation therefor. A good many of us thought that the legislature would ‘be in" better business digging ditches, but Minnesota is a great state and we ‘must help to malke it many sided. The Minnesota State Art So- ciety has not done much of any- thing yet, It takes time, Art is long in Minnesota as elsewhere —also a bit slow. The society has been devoting its energies to an attempt to secare artistic de- signs for a seal for itself, a cer- tificate of membership, adiploma, a medal of award and a letter head. It has been at this a yedr, but is compelled to extend the time of competition as no satis- factory designs have yet been re- ceived, Minnesota surely has artists. They should rally to the help of the state art society. its I7 1S a matter for general con gratulation that although various causes have combined to make the year a duller one in business throughout the country the towns of northern Minnesota have made steady progress.
