The Daily Pioneer i el it P’UBL!:;HED EVERY AFTERNOON. . PIONEER PUBLISH!NG C0. By R. W. HITCHCOCK. Entered in the postofice at Bemidji, Mino., as second class matter. oot AN RN Official County and City Paper A MINNESOTA concern will make syrup from pumpkins. and advertises that it will pay $2 per ton for pumpkins, Here’s an other chance for the north coun- try whose vegetables are big,‘zgr than any that the rest of the northwest can boast of. An or dinary acre will produce from 20 to 30 tons of pumpkins. The past few seasons have demon- strated that the soil of Beltrami county is unexcelled for the pro- duction of vegetables and there is good reason to believe that we could raise from 40 to 70 tons of pumpkins to the acre. Let’s have a syrup factory at once. CERTAIN predictions made by _ the Pioneer some months ago that the spring and summer of 1904 would bring an influx of land seekers to northern .Minne- ' sota have been amply borne out. There are more people in Bel- trami county today looking for - cheap land with the intention of “settling upon it than there have * ever been before. Yet Beltrami colfntv has not been made known to the seek rs-to-the soutirof us| in nny 2 eneral or syst, ematlc way. One of the urgent nesds of this section is some systematic " scheme . for advertising Tesources. e THE Business Men’s Clubof Bemidji is now well begun and thereis every reason to believe that it will serve as a valuable| means of putting various muni- cipal enterprises under way. The club has not laid out any elaborate plan of action nor-doesit-expect to build Bemidji in a day, but' it will aim to make itSlf useful to the city-and-to Beltrami county | in-a sort of every day way which will perhaps count for a good deal more in the end. EVERY man believes in adver- tising in a general way but be- cause he does not feel certain how heought to go at it to benefit him- self he'is often doubtful as to the results it may give him in his —own indivdual case. Advertis- ing is as much a part of a man’s business as any other feature of 1t and he ought to give it the same consideration. Do you? Two New York sporting men went to arbitration rather than to thelaw and settled a $30,000 damage suit in two hours and the d‘g'méfii;'wa.s paid in two min- utes after the decision was ren- dered. They were true sports. JupGECOLLINS would certainly Thake a ~thrifty goverior, He has saved enough out of his salary as judge of the supreme court to put more money into the gubernatorial fight than any man has heretofore done in Minn- esota. The townsite company has lots of in- quiries from people who com- template engaging in business here and we are going to have several new bus;ness ‘houses || .hpened up soon.’ Traveling Man: “I think its an injustice for -the Crookston papers to call Bemidji a tough town. —Picked upa-copy of the Journal the other day and from the looks of one of its local pages guess the sky line is the limit on the game up there. Prominent society man got out of town with another man’s wife, disgraceful row in a_joint, police have been compelled to raid wine rooms and all that sort of thing. Crooks- ton is one of the toughest towns in this country right now. There is a great field at Crookston for the right kind of a Sunday school missionary.” AMUSEMENTS l The three nights engagement of the Biascope company opened toa fair business at the city opera house last night and the entertainment was without ques- tion the most meritorious thing which has seen at the city opera house this season. The pictures were all new and every one was interesting. * Especially worthy of mention were the pictures of the Russo-Jap war and the flight of the Canadian Pacific express through the Crow’s Nest pass Gountry, showing some of the marvelous feats of engineering necessary to the construction of the great transcontinental rail- way. The audience was thor- oaghly pleased, the attraction is more than worth the money and will bear the most liberal patron- age. Tonight the pictures will feature the presentation of the Indian play Hiawatha as pre sented by the Ojibway Indiuns at Desboreaux, Ontario. There will also be a new film of war pictures __'mmn to show us. and other featiires. doall kinds of steam and water pipe re- pairing. : —— Freseo Painting O .
