The Daily Pioneer s oaadtasatead PUBLISHED EVERY AFTERNOON. PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. By R. W. HITCHCOC & PR AR NN PN PNNP RSN, ‘Entered In the postoffice at Bemidji, Minn., assecond class matter. PERIETRNE o oot ool sy SUUIISVVORS Official County and City Paper e s psn Ao O8NP SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR 1804 APRIL 1904 s/ MEN WANTED: What this nerthern country wants is more men. It needs settlers, It must have farmers. Comparatively ~speaking - Bel® trami county is as yet but thinly, settled and there are thousands of acres of fine farming land within - convenient -market - dis- tance of Bemidii that today lie untilled and unprofitable. Be- midji is prosperous but it will be far more prosperous when it has placed a farmer who means business upon every quarter sec: tionin its tributary territory. The manufacturing possibilities of Bemidji are for the most part admitted by everyone but its possibilities as the center of a rich farming country are yet far from being realized, More and better farming has been done in Beltrami county in the past two years than in all the previous years of its history. In a few years Bemidji will be the center of a farming country that will be one of its big assets. Speed the day! UP TO THE FATHERS. Fvery father and mother in the city that cares for his children will applaud the determination of the board of education to put an ~—end to cigarette smoking iso far as lies in their power. The sad . factis that too. many fathers and - mothers- deliberately teach-" the habit to their children. : The dealers in tobaccos are not . 80 much to blame as are the par- ents of the city. So long as fathers will persist in sending their small children to the store for tobacco, cignrs and cigarettes it will be very difficult to stop the sale of cigarettes to children. The practice is a. very common one and is for the most part to blame for the smoking of cigar- ettes that is done by children. When fathers persist in abus- ing their children it is pretty hard for the law to protect them. THE Minneapolis Journal at last has the courage of its con- victions and openly admits in- its editorial columas that it is for Collins. The cowardly course of the Journal during the past four months in }ending its news col- umns to a -systematic campaign for Collins while not daring to utter a single word for him edi- +torially is without parallel in the history of journalism in Minne- sota. THE "Beltrami County News threatens to publish--certain an- " clent.articles which appeared in ioneer lambasting Robert _C.Dunn. Will they at-the same _time republish those St. Cloud Journal Press laudations of the ex-auditor as the mostcapable official the state ever had? — — WHEN both political factions . of the republican party in Minne- ‘ * sota are so tremendously solicit- forthe re-election of Senators Nelson and Clapp, why should - _ghe senators worry? “~Now_ is the time for all good ‘men to come to the aid of their faction. The arrival of the 14th hopful at a Turtle River home causes the Pine Tree to offer its condolences in this wise: ‘When first a chap becomes a dad And learns that *‘It’s a boy,’” He wants the world to know he’s glad. And jumps for very joy, But when there comes the tenth or so He hears the news and grins, And sighs in aceents-soft-and low; *‘Thank Heaven, ’tisn’t twins’’. Tips of the Tbngue C: R. The running team hasalready commenced work and Bemidji will-—make an effort-to keep the tournament: banner in town.” E. E. McDonald: “The high- est tribute that could be paid to Judge Spooner’s popularity and efficiency on the bench is the petition signed by every member of the bar in the Fifteenth judi cial district asking the people to re-nominate him for the judge- ship. Judge Spooner is one of ablest judges in the state and the compliment paid him by the bar of the district is in every way desvered.” E. J. Willitts:—“It pays to ad- vestise. We having been doing a great deal of advertising in the home papers and outside the city as well. We had two sales last woek whiich we can trace dir- ectly to our advertising.” Peter Larkin: . “There’s no use in talking, we can’t get along without the Pioneer. I didn’t get my paper lastnight-and I ran all over town trying to get a copy. You give us all the local news and your telegrahp service covers thoroughly all the war news and stuff of general inter- est. We can’t keep’ house with- out the Pioneer.” How’s This?
