PIONEER PUBLISHING V. By R. W. HITCHCOCK. 8 AR APPSR Entered in the postoffice at Bemidji, Minn., as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER VEAR A BIT OF-HISTORY. The Duluth Herald calls at- tention to the history of the city of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It was once the seat of a great lumber industry and it was freely pre- dicted that when lumbering was done Oshkosh would become a country village. But lumbering is done in Oshkosh and the place is a city of 40,000. Saginaw City, Mich., was built on pifxe logs, and there were once 30 big sawmills in the city. Today thereis nota saw- "mill in the entire Saginaw valley, but Saginaw isa city of 60,000. The business men. of Oshkosh and the business men of Saginaw did it. They encouraged manu- factures until these cities are today noted as manufacturing centers in theirrespective states. Bemidji' has every advantage of location and natural resources -and can become just as big and “flourishing as Oshkosh or Sag- inawor many other towns whose history has been the same. THE nofthwest agd northern Minnesotain particularis intense- 1y interested in the outcome of __the tru_ggle for control of the - Northern Pacific. The attitude . of northern Minnesota is voiced by the business men of Duluth when they declare that it would result in serious injury to the entire northwest should Har- riman. gain control of the great north line to the coast. Harri- man’s interests aie not with this country where Hill’s-are and if one of them must have the Northern Pacitic it is certainly far better for the northwest that it should be Hill. NO MAN in many years in Am- erica has been more viciously at- tacked than Marcus A. Hanna and now that heis dead, what- { ever may be our opinion as to his ability and greatness, we are all agreed that he rendered to ‘these United States the services of a real statesman in her hour of | _need. There is a moral to all this and that is when you are ~ worthy of so much attack you must beaccomplishing something more for the ,world than the rest of your fellows are. A GREAT public school for boys+f and girls, men and women will shortly be opened at St. Louis. It is safe to say that the big fair will teach the American people and the world in general a very great deal. Most of us will go ‘there for the pleasure but we will study the lessons set forth just the same. When the fair is done the world will probably be promoted a few grades. EVERY pine needle in Bemidji was loaded with three inches of snow this morning. The effect was very beautiful but not ex- . actly pleasant to contemplate at this season of the year. - We wourp feel rather silly, ‘wouldn’t we now, if Harriman do worse things to us than e merger ever dreamed of. CoNNON seems to be a pretty | big gun. i ;vvv;;vvvvvvvv { BITS fFROM NORTH ¢ 71 E | COUNTRY ¥ PPN S ...2. Rural-routes.for Pine City. May 2. z Leap year hegins to strike in at Fort Francis. Its getting dangerous to spring anything about spring. The Rat Portage camps now seek their summer holes. The Felton Tribune is a grow- ing infant eight weeks old. A lot of good fellows at North- ome will start a lodge of Odd Fellows. The commercial club of Koochi- ching will go out and compel the settlers to come in. The Red Lake Courier sub- scribes new patrons by-the score and deserves them all and more. Wires have been laid to allow Aitkin and Grand Rapids a talk fest any time at schedule: rates. «Jim Hill has lost his suit but his shirt sleeve still can hide something”, thinks-the Big Fork Compass. A man at Rock City tried to pull down the stars'and stripes. He has been seeing stars and feeling stripes ever since. The Brainerd Dispatch has some sympathy for Bristow with 80,000 employees under him and 200 congressman on top of him. “Gret off the reservation”, is not a popular cry at Thief River Falls anymore. They are busy now getting as many onas pos- sible. How’s This? We offer One Hundred Dollars Reward for any casc of Catarrh that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure. F. J.
