Commenting on a recent edi- torial in these columns the Du- luth News Tribune pointedly re- marks. “Itis difficult for par- ents to belieye their little sons are capable of lyingand stealing, but these are common vices in young. The most cherubic baby mouth scarce learns to fashion speech, when it lisps a lie. The boys of Bemidji, the boys of Du- luth, and Minnesota and the country over—the boys: of the whoele wide world—are, of the right sort if rightly guided. If they are nottaught to beobedient, and are not made amenable to dis}:ipline, great injustice has been done them. Your boy is entitled to your most careful training and most engrossed attention. He should be “made to mind,” and early ,in. life there should be instilled into his expanding mind that awe and respect for proper authority that will make a man of him later. His temptations are mani- fold, and grow with every day of his busy little life. Throw the guide lines of fair play and re- __sponsibility to him, and see that he gets the connection, The boy is worth while. Give him a lift:** The indifference of parents to the imfluences which survound - their boys is one of youth’s greatest perils. Another isthe be- lief of the fond fatherand mother that their boy can do no wrong. The truth is that the youngsters of now-a-days haveaboutas much of the old Adam in them as did their dads and we can each re- member, perhaps, now how much that was. We notice that few fathers are hollering about their own immaculate childhood days. It behooves every pavent to 100k to his own. . THE PIONEER hesitates to .en- -dorse any scheme looking to the reduction of the Minnesota-for- est reserve as seftled by the ~—Morris-act: -The fight for a for- est reserve has about every diffi- culty that the selfishness of man can contrive already interposed | in its way. We all believe in the | forest reserveideain theabstract | but few of us are willing to sacri- fice anything of the present that our sons Or our Son’s Sons may reaparichprofit. Minnesota wants its agricultural lands in this part _of the state thrown on the mark- et at the earliest possible moment, but the plan to cut off one third of the forest reserve to find more farming land is one that should not be unadvisedly endorsed. PRINCETON, New Jersey, wants four years more of Grover—the ' president. Let ushope, at least, that we shall all have many more years of him—the man. SOLDIERS FILE A PROTEST. i Object to Quality of Food Furnished at | i Fort Sheridan. Chicago, April (.—Formal protest against the quality and lack of variety in food furnished to the soldiers of the garrison at Fort Sheridan has been expressed by them in a petition sent to Washington. The men who signed the document declare therein that un- less their request for more palatable rations is granted they will refuse to re-enlist when their present terms ex- pire. now at Fort Sheridan, returned from the Philippines, 160 men have been honorahly discharged.
