AN NN NNR NN NN Batored In the postoffice at Bemldji, Minn., as second class matter, AR ANAPNNARAN NN NN Official County and City Paper AN NN NNNNNNPN SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR VERY FLIMSY REASONING. The attack upon M. D. Stoner on the ground that he has-been successful, in acquiring some property in the world outside of Bemidji is too flimsy to warrant serious consideration. Mr. Stoner’s opponents should con- fine themselves set ting forth the qualifications of the men whom they are supporting. If Mr. Stoner has been suc- cessful in life that factis much to s credit. He came to Be- midji a poor man, and he has suc- ceeded by dinc of hard worlk and native ability. If holding prop el'»iy outside of the city is a dis- qualification there would be few men of capacity in Bemidji who would be eligible. A great deal of laborious argu- ment is being set forth also to show that Blackduck, where Mr. Stoner has interests, will soon be aspiring to: form a county of its own, whereupon it is charged that Mr. Stoner will do his ut- most against the interests of this city. In the first place, Mr. Stoner during the last county division contest did everything in his power to prevent Blackduck from entering the lists for a county seat; and in the second place, the last legislature changed the county division law so that it now takes a majority of all the votes cast at an election in order to set off any partof acounty. Under this law further division in Beltrami county is absolutely impossible for come, many years to There isa plenty of good things | which Mr. Stoner's opponents might say for their own ticket, but their practice appears to tear down rather than to build up; hence the resort to such idle talk. A GREAT WORK. The annual report of the state drainage commission has been made public. A, Mm-éhall; assessor, F. H. Clark; justice for one year, W. A. Reamer; justice for two years, T. Senyohl; constable for one year, J. J. Doran, of this city, nar- rowly escaped death in a fire at Blackduck last night which com- pletely - destroyed the saloon building and fixtures of A. B. Hazen, valued in all at $3,300. Mr. Doran had rented the building from Mr. Hazen and had hired a man from Deer River to run the place. He went up yes- terday to arrange for the open- ing up of the saloon and spent the day there. He went to bed in the building shortly after mid- night, after having built up a good fire in the stove. About 2 o’clock he again replenished the fire and went to bed. He was awakened at 8, nearly suffocated by smoke, and in 2 futile attempt to make his escape from the building fell against a chair near the end of the bar. This brought him near the floor, where the smoke was not so dense, and he made his way to the cellar through a trap door, The smoke, however, soon drove him from there, and almost overcome by suffocation he climbed up the stairs leading upstairs, and after a hard struggle reached safety through the front door. As soon as Mr. Doran recov- ered from suffocation he turned in the alarm, but fire by this time had gained too much hecad- way for the department to save the building. The building was valued at $2,500 with $1200 insurance. A guard was placed over the re- mains of the ruined building, awaiting the action of insurance adjusters. BIG CUT years, William King. - Contest .the Claim. A contest has been brought against the claim of Mr. Olson, the Kelliher meat man, and the contestee, expect to prove their case out of Mr. Olson’s own mouth. It is claimed that Mr. Olson has been talking politics a good deal and asserting his right to do so on the ground that he is a citizen of Kelliher; hence the contest. Married by Judge Reynolds. Harry Provo and Miss Mary Welch were married this morn- ing by Judge Reynolds. Both the parties are from Blackduck, where they have a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. who join with the Pioneer in wishing them happiness and success. Caucus Tonight. The village of Kelliher will hold a caucus this evening. Politics is very quiet at Kelliher this year. It is understood that the members of the present council are candidates for renomination, and that there will be no.opposi- tion to them. A Hint for the Future mensely from the conparatively small amount of money which it has put into draining in north- ern Minnesota. The state lands which have besn reclaimed and those which have been increased in value will pay the price of all appropriations twice over. This is a very good investment for the state, even though the rest of the territory drained had gained no- thing, priations have wonderful development in north- ern Minnesota. They have made money for hundreds of settlers ~~and reclaimed touseful purposes thousands of acres. The lesson should be plain. The state must enter upon the work of drainage upon a more liberal scale. Where tens of thousands have been devoted to this worlk the state must invest “fiundreds of thousands.
