AR AN P RPN Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR 1904 FEBRUARY 1904 LOOKING BACKWARD. Looking backward is a habit. It becomes the moods of the aged and reminiscent. It1s a pleasant pastime under certain conditions, ! but under others it is discourag- ing. Dull times have been the general complaint in Bemidji for some time past. With almost every business house in the city doing a fair volume of business there is a disposition in some quarters to look back to the time when the palmy days of the vil- lage made it the talk of the North- west. If it has been dull in Be- midji during the present winter the ciny'is not alone in this con- dition. The comes from every town iu the state. A number of conditions combine to make it so, but it does not neccessarily follow that the same complaint present slack times are always going to continue. It will re- quire but a very little sober thought and careful comparison |/ to arrive at the conclusion that |@ Bemidji is approaching one of the most prosperous seasons in the history of the city. With the opening of the spring we are promised an activity along all lines that will be quite up to the old standard. are looking this way and there is not a town in the state that is at- |} tracting more attention at pres- ent. The city is yetin embryo. The spring of 1904 will mark a new era in its growth and pros- perity and there is much ofa re- |§ assuring nature in the outlook. JoHN ALECK Dowig, the ac- knowledged premier grafter of the world, has been compelled to flee from enraged mobs with startling regularity in New South Wales, where he has been stunt- ing for the past several weeks. ; M pastmaster in the art of grafting is evidenced by the fact that he r. Dowie’s thoroughness as a always makes his escape just in time. CHICAGO has recovered from the shock of the great Iroquois theatre fire. Chicago, Feb. 18.—Pneumonia, in- fluenza and bronchitis are keeping Chi- cago physicians busy. Nearly every hospital in the city has one or more cases of pneumonia, while the less serious diseases are even more preva- lent. Added to those are the far greater number of cases treated at homes, making the list of sufferers a long one. The situation is compli- cated by the fact that nearly every one of Chicago’s big hospitals is filled and unable to take any more pa- tients. At the county hospital there are 949 patients, ITeaving but oné vacant bed. Cenditions are similar in the other large hospitals. Of the 661 deaths reported last week by the health department report 175 were from pneumonia, while 37 were from cases of bronchitis and in: LLov. fluerza. Friday Night PROFESSIONAL CARDS P.J.
