McIver came down from Farley ~this morning and is spending the day in the city. Thos. Moodie, local editor of the Pioneer, is on the sick list today, but expects to be aronud again tomorrow. Mr. and Mrs. C. C Woodward, who for the past two months have been visiting at the home of their daughter, Mrs. E. J. Ryan, of St. Paul, will return to this city tonight. John Sibley, the logger of Bena, is in the city foday. Mr. Sibley has just completed a con- tract of putting in 4,000.000 feet of logs near Bena and is now looking up another contract. Thirty guests were in attend- ance at a taffy pull given at the home of Mrs. D. H. Fullerton Saturday night. The party was given by Mrs. Fullerton and Miss Clara Beaumont. An en- joyable time is reported. Make Turpentine. The latest thing in the line of industry is being promoted up at | Wrenshall, Ttasca county, where a number of citizens are trying to starta company for the manu- facture of turpentine. Pine stumps will be used for material, of which there is an abundance in that country, and a carload of them has- been sent to Hinkley for inspection by the turpentine factory at that place, and results are pending. To Work for Uncle Sam. During the past few days five recruits have been secured at the local ‘recruiting office, two of whom will go to Seattle for the coast defense artillery service and three for the cavalry. Those enlisted for the artillery are Samuel P. ONE LIFE LOST AND THREE: BULLDINGS DESTROYED. Fire Is Supposed to Have Origin- ated in Office Over Bank Building. Three buildings and the loss of a life are the resulus of the worst fire in the history of Northome which occured Saturday night. The buildings of the bank, the| store: of Thos. llstad and the saloon of Hugh McIntoshwere en- tively destroyed, and C. D. Schu- maker lost his life in attempting to save some of the furniture in his store building. As soon as the fire was dis- covered the alarm was sounded, and the citizens of the town turned out enmasse, but the fire rapidly spread to the store and saloon in spite of all efforts they could put forth. Schumaker, who lost his life, was owner of the store building and wasone of the foremost in trying to save furniture from the | burning buildings. He had brought out several loads suc- cessfully after the buildings were a mass of flames and returned for another, but was overcome by the heat and smoke and could not make his escape from the fire. The fire originated in the oftice of Judge Simons, over the bank building. from on overheated stove. The safe was carried out of the -bank and all valuable paper preserved, and some of the furni- ture in the other buildings. Insurance was carried on the| stock and fixtures of the store, | and some on the saloon building: The bank was owned by the owners of the First National|_ bank of this city.
